Corruption:The Hidden Cost of Development

  Abstract Corruption represents a significant yet often concealed barrier to sustainable development and effective governance. By diverting public resources for private gain, corruption distorts policy priorities, weakens institutional credibility, and undermines public trust in democratic systems. This chapter examines corruption as a structural and developmental challenge rather than merely a legal violation. Drawing upon established scholarly research, it explores the conceptual foundations, causes, and economic, political, and social consequences of corruption. The analysis highlights how weak governance structures, limited transparency, and inadequate accountability mechanisms create favorable conditions for corrupt practices.
